Piaget counts Hollywood golden boy Ryan Reynolds and actress Jessica Chastain as brand ambassadors. One of the most prestigious luxury watch makers in the world, Piaget is to the ultra-thin watch movement what Hublot is to natural rubber straps.
A little history here : in 1957, Piaget launched the Calibres 9P and 12P, the world's first ultra-thin movements, at just 2 mm and 2.3 mm deep respectively. By 1990, Piaget was firmly established as a luxury watchmaker that made sophisticated and stylish timepieces with large dials and uncommon case shapes, both of which were facilitated by the unusually slim movements. 1990 was a big year for Piaget because they launched the 430P and 500P movements, which would go on to appear in the new look Piaget Altiplano. The Altiplano, reimagined from a 1957 model, became more streamlined and minimalistic for the 21st century market. Out went the rather Victorian-looking Roman numerals, scrolled Piaget script and quite bold case. In came the slightly ethereal appearance of a dial and a case that almost seamlessly blended into each other.
So, the Piaget Altiplano G0A29112 is thin. Really thin. Ultra-thin watches might be a niche market but those who appreciate them really appreciate them. The craftsmanship that goes into actually physically making an ultra-thin movement is nothing short of astounding. Hence the price tag of a Piaget or a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon 1322410, for example.
The Piaget Altiplano G0A29112 has the 430P hand-wound mechanical movement, a mere 2.1 mm thick. The 600P—the thinnest tourbillon in the world—was based on the 430P.
The Altiplano G0A29112 is simple, with hour and minutes functions, but it's also incredibly tough. Piaget is also famous for the quality of its finishes. The 430P bears the classic circular Cotes de Geneve, beveled bridges and Prussian blue screws. It has a power reserve of 43 hours.
Everything about the Piaget Altiplano G0A29112 evokes a sense of effortless elegance. Let's start with the 18 K white gold case, which is clearly polished but not to the same high sheen as that of a Rolex. Then you have the simple white dial with slim baton hour and minute hands and delicate hour markers, protected by sapphire glass, renowned for its durability and scratch resistance. As I said earlier, case and dial seem to almost segue into each other, adding to the feeling of weightlessness.
Water resistant to 30 m, this piece has a fixed bezel and is 38 mm, which might sound a tad narrow now 44 m seems to be almost standard. But this is no luxury sports watch. You can almost smell the tang of the traditional black leather alligator strap, which fastens with a white gold buckle bearing the Piaget name in the watchmaker's Art Nouveau-style font. Look at the solid caseback and you'll find the Piaget coat of arms, finely engraved.
The beautiful simplicity of the Piaget Altiplano G0A29112 is impressive. Technically, it falls into the luxury dress watch category but if you were so inclined, you could wear it to work or a wedding. It could make any suit look good. And I strongly recommend you do wear it, because as a thing of beauty, it should be on show, not trapped in a box or a gilded cage.
